Black Dahlia

“Beth Short’s Lullaby”

It began on lake eerie 1934
The lower portion of a torso washed ashore
The identity authorities were never sure
Other pieces of corpses turned up more and more

An animal butcher found a basket of flesh behind his store
which turned out to be parts of a woman named Florence
It's 1936, worse than it was before
Jane Does and John Does with parts unaccounted for
Eight heads were never found, many theories take form
He died, disappeared or just moved to California

Beth Short was born July 29
Raised on frayed family ties
Set out, left Massachusetts behind
For sandy beaches and blue skies

To California with stars in her eyes
And stardom on her mind
She would be famous, she prophesized
But she never knew why

Did she feel safe and accept a ride
Did she put up a fight
With her hands tied, her face carved into a smile
Was she still alive

Hollywood has many ways to die
And they’re all glorified
This was staged magic trick of the eye
With a blade through her side

The killer drove off in broad daylight
And he knew how to hide
The cops argued about who was right
And they still can’t decide
